Mansion tax will be fast-tracked warns Miliband

Labour would introduce the mansion tax within its first 100 days in power, according to party leader Ed Miliband.

He says the tax levied on owners of homes valued at £2m and over would be part of an ‘emergency package’ required to fund the recruitment for 1,000 extra trainee nurses.

“With A&E in crisis, staff shortages, and hospitals weighed down by large deficits, this plan has to start immediately. Straight away. With real money, right now. In our first 100 days, our first Budget, our first year in office, we’ll begin to bring in funds from the mansion tax and tobacco levy” says Miliband.

High end estate agent Savills says there are about 97,000 properties in the UK valued at £2m and above but Zoopla says the number is higher - at 108,000 - while Knight Frank puts the total at about 110,000.

All are agreed that the vast majority of these properties - well over 80 per cent - are in London and south east England.
