Portal juggling: MP submits application for Westminster debate

The MP who pledged his support to a campaign against portal juggling has now submitted an application for a Westminster Hall Debate on the subject.

Derek Thomas, MP for St Ives, has applied for a debate to take place week commencing June 13 after previously speaking about the issue on BBC Radio in April.

Portal juggling is the term used to describe agents and developers listing and re-listing the same properties on the portals, creating false impressions about the time a property has been on the market and the number of properties on an agent's books.

The campaign against portal juggling has been led by a group of agents, including Chris Wood of PDQ Estates in Cornwall, who says that there are around 10,000 'portal juggles' each year.

Earlier this month, the National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team confirmed that it is investigating agents' allegations of portal juggling and it subsequently confirmed that it had received a portal juggling complaint from a member of the public.

In April, some sections of the mainstream press reported on research by data firm Propcision, which suggested that agents working on high profile London developments had been 'removing and then ‘immediately’ re-listing properties' from the major portals.
