A local news outlet in Essex is reporting that a Chelmsford agent claims he crashed his car whilst driving drunk following an incident in which his boss humiliated him in an email to colleagues.
Essex Live says local magistrates heard that Ben Mackay was driving over the legal limit of alcohol on the afternoon of Sunday, August 13; the force of the crash was such that Mackay was thrown from his car.
He was found to have 197 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood - well over the legal limit of 80 milligrammes.
Mackay’s legal representative told the court that earlier that day “the [branch] manager decided to send an all-staff email belittling his [Mackay's] work effort and commitment to the firm.”
Chairman of the Bench Anthony Brock told Mackay that he created a dangerous situation in which people could have been hurt.
Mackay was fined £230 for driving under the influence of alcohol, ordered to pay £80 in costs and the victim surcharge of £30. He was also disqualified from driving for 20 months which could be reduced by 20 weeks if he successfully completes a drink driving rehabilitation course.
His legal representative told the court that Mackay would lose his job as a result of the verdict.
