People are more likely to give word-of-mouth recommendations for handyman services than recommend estate agents, according to a controversial poll.
The survey of 1,000 adults discussed 20 services including plumbing, insurance brokerage, interior, electrical work and even pest control.
Just under 64 per cent of respondents said they had used an estate agent in the past but only 48 per cent of those said they would recommend the company.
The survey, conducted for estate agency comparison website SellingUp.com by online polling firm Toluna, asked 1,000 UK residents which property services they had used and whether they would recommend the company to someone else.
"This result will provide fresh ammunition for the new wave of online estate agents” says the website’s director, Oliver Lewis. “What will be hard for high street agents to take is that this finding is not simply rhetoric from online rivals, it's independent customers providing genuine feedback on their experiences” he adds.
Plumbers top the table with 71 per cent of those who had used one in the past saying they would happily recommend the service to someone else.
Painters and decorators would be recommended by 69 per cent of those respondents who had used them, and 66 per cent would recommend electricians.

Almost half would recommend their agent- not that bad, and hopefully the other half will find a better agent next time and recommend them.
