New housing minister Sajid Javid says the subtle change of name for his department and his own job “reflects this government’s renewed focus to deliver more homes and build strong communities across England.”
In a brief statement last evening the new Secretary of State for Housing, the Communities and Local Government - who until the reshuffle was merely the Secretary of State for the Communities and Local Government - said the name change demonstrated the “absolute priority” to build more homes.
Not everyone saw it the same way with some analysts on social media describing the change in the name of the DCLG to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government as tokenistic and cosmetic; taken with the small number of other Cabinet changes, the much vaunted reshuffle became something of a non-event, some claimed.
