Complaints about two agencies lead to advertising watchdog stepping in

An estate agency has been the subject of a complaint over website wording which appeared to suggest that it had a branch in a town - when in fact it did not.

The Lovelle Estate Agency advertised on its own website for applicants wishing to become a ‘Newark Personal Agent’; the ad included a Newark contact number as well as an email address. 

A complainant contacted the Advertising Standards Authority, challenging whether this ad was misleading because the webpage gave the impression that the Lovell Estate Agency had a physical branch in Newark, when actually the agency does not.

“After we approached the advertiser with our concerns, they decided to amend the ad” says a spokesperson for the authority, which has closed the complaint, classing it as ‘informally resolved’.

Another complaint informally resolved by the ASA this week concerns Boro Properties agency in Middlesbrough. 

A property was listed on its website as being new, and featuring double glazing; a complainant said the home in question was not new, and didn’t have that feature. 

“After we approached the advertiser with our concerns, Boro Properties agreed that the information was inaccurate and agreed to amend the listing. On this basis, we agreed that the case had been resolved informally” says an ASA spokesperson.
