Winding up: agency closes and 30 complaints made about customer money

An established estate agency in Guernsey is being listed as 'voluntarily winding up' and liquidators have been appointed.

Concerns about Sarnia Estate Agency, which is located in the island's capital St Peter Port, first emerged earlier in the month when a tenant accused the firm of pocketing her £2,000 deposit.

The agency's branch is then reported to have closed last week, according to ITV, and Grant Thornton Limited have since been appointed as liquidators.

Guernsey Police say they have received around 30 complaints about Sarnia over the last week, with tenants and landlords saying they have been 'left in the dark' as to if and when they will get their funds back.

Lottie Barnes, the tenant who made the original complaint about the agency, was due to move into a property on August 20 after making a final payment to Sarnia.

However, when contacting the firm to pick up the keys, she could not get through to them. She contacted her prospective landlord and he said he had not been paid the deposit by the agent.

ITV reports that the company's managing director is believed to have resigned.
