Almost a million home sales lost to Brexit, new survey claims

New research by comparison website GoCompare suggests almost a million house sales have been lost because of Brexit.

The study claims that in the last three years, since the 2016 EU referendum, some 1.5m people have delayed the decision to move home.

When asked what caused them to put their plans on ice, most of those surveyed blamed Brexit; GoCompare says this is the equivalent of 937,000.

Other reasons people gave for postponing a house move included a lack of funds, difficulty in obtaining an appropriate mortgage, affordability of housing in the area in which they would like to move and, concerns over job security.

While Brexit was the top answer for both men and women, men were much more likely to blame EU exit uncertainty (68 per cent) than women (48 per cent).

Women were also more concerned than men about a lack of funds, high local house prices and job uncertainty.

The survey was conducted in mid-May through an online questionnaire of 2,004 randomly selected British adults.
