Don’t tell Boris Johnson, but neighbours matter to many house buyers

A timely new survey suggests that 75 per cent of buyers give at least some consideration to what their potential neighbours are like when they buy a home.

Older people are much more likely to take this into consideration than younger people with the survey showing that 33 per cent of over-55s think about this to a great extent, compared with only 13 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds.

The study, by polling company Ipsos MORI, says 56 per cent of 55 to 75 year olds talk to their neighbours at least once a week; even amongst 16 to 24 year olds, who may be out more because of college and work commitments, some 28 per cent speak to neighbours at least once a week.

“Neighbours have a huge impact on our quality of life with three-quarters of Britons saying they consider the impact neighbours might have when considering where to live, especially older people” explains Kully Kaur-Ballagan, director of the polling company.

“While a majority of the public believed that Britons have become less neighbourly over the past two years, complaints about neighbours are not new, and the survey reveals that most of us do talk to our neighbours at least once a month – although this falls when it comes to more frequent conversation.”
