Rightmove says no to massive windfall from taxpayers

Rightmove says it’s going to reject over £150,000 in payouts from the government's Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

The portal furloughed 160 employees after the Coronavirus crisis hit; it would be entitled to claim £160,000 in bonus payments, the equivalent of £1,000 per individual.

However, in a statement over the weekend it said: "Now that the housing market has reopened across all parts of the UK we're in a fortunate position that by the end of July all of our furloughed employees will be back at work, and therefore we will not need to make use of the furlough bonus scheme."

Earlier this month the High Street stores John Lewis and Primark also revealed they would not be claiming their £1,000 per furlough staff member - in the latter case it would have received £30m in public cash.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the bonus scheme as part a package of measures designed to bolster the economy. However, if every furloughed worker returned to their jobs, it could cost the public purse more than £9 billion.
