A new week, a new PM – and yet another Housing Secretary?

A week-long race to be the next Conservative Party leader and the Prime Minister kicks off this week, or may already be over by the time you have read this.

But where does this leave the UK’s revolving door of housing ministers?

Levelling Up and Housing Secretary Simon Clarke – a Liz Truss loyalist - last week controversially backed Boris Johnson to return as Prime Minister.

Speaking to the BBC over the weekend, Clarke said: “Boris delivers for the places other politicians have left behind.”

He has received backlash on Twitter, with users highlighting his message when Johnson resigned in July stating: “I am deeply saddened but this is the right decision."

But just three months later he supported a return claiming "the comeback will be greater than the setback."

Johnson released a statement last night claiming that despite receiving 102 nominations, he would not stand for the leadership vote.

It is unclear where this leaves Clarke and others who have backed Johnson to return in recent days.

Clarke was due to appear at the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee on Tuesday but this has now been cancelled.

No reason was given for the postponement but should other confirmed candidates such as former chancellor Rishi Sunak or Penny Mordaunt win, there is no guarantee that Clarke - or any other current minister or Secretary of State - will be in Cabinet by the end of the week.

In contrast, current Housing Minister Lee Rowley appears to have taken a more pragmatic tone.

He said on Twitter:  “Far too much attention, so far, on personalities rather than politics in the leadership election 

“We’re twelve years in. We've made mistakes. We’re facing an existential crisis.

“First, I want to know ‘what’ and ‘how,’ not ‘who.’

"So, candidates/possible candidates: what’s the plan?”
