Brexit triggers surge in buyers seeking ‘global citizenship’

An estate agency has announced what it calls a ‘Global Citizenship Division’ to take advantage of a surge in interest for homes that come with permanent residence.

A statement from the agency - Chestertons - says: “The pandemic and Brexit have caused a surge in enquiries from the UK for EU Programs, specifically Portugal, Cyprus, and Greece, both offering high-value real estate acquisitions with the attached Permanent Residence.

“There has also been significant growth in demand for schemes in the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, and St. Kitts. This growth is due to varying donation or investment options, expedited processing, and the ability to gain alternative citizenship in the countries.”

The new Chestertons division is actually based in Dubai and will guide prospective buyers from initial consultation through to the issuing of the desired passport.

Dennis Chan, Chestertons’ global head of international sales, comments: “In the last two years, we have observed a rising trend of our client’s seeking advice on alternative residency and citizenship options to have a peace of mind regarding their futures.

“With our global presence spanning from the Caribbean to Europe and Asia, we decided that now was the right time to offer a global citizenship consultancy service to respond better to our high net-worth clients' needs.”

And Sheldon Labuschange, who will head the new Global Citizenship, division, adds: “We have carefully considered the needs of our marketplace and we look forward to providing real long-term value.”

The permanent residence criteria does not give EU citizenship and is open to people from most countries. Each individual EU country has its own criterion for naturalisation, e.g. France is 6 years permanent residence or 3 years if you are studying full time. Portugal and Germany are more difficult. Moving to the British dependencies in the West Indies is as it has always been and has hardly been triggered by Brexit! Global Citizenship is a lovely Orwellian phrase which actually means nothing!
