Key leasehold body announces conference schedule 

The Association of Leasehold Enfranchisement Practitioners (ALEP) has announced the schedule for its annual Conference.

The event returns to its traditional in-person format this year, following two years of online events thanks to the pandemic. 

The organisation will host a full day conference programme on Thursday September 29 2022 at The Shaw Theatre at the Pullman London St Pancras Hotel. 

This year’s conference, always a leading event for professionals working in leasehold enfranchisement, will debate and highlight issues that have influenced the sector over the last year.  

 In the morning sessions the focus will on those newer to practice, as well as professionals looking to develop skills that are complementary to their core business.

James White, an award-winning sales mentor and trainer James White, will deliver a session on “The key to sales”, while Google expert Josh Whiten will explain the importance of digital marketing.

Elsewhere, Nikki Squire and Doran Davidson from coaching specialists Strevas will round off the morning with an interactive session on the art of negotiation. 

In the afternoon, sessions will examine the issues facing ALEP members in their practice and provide an overview of cases that impact professionals working in the enfranchisement sector.    

Mark Loveday, of Tanfield Chambers, will address the evolution of Right to Manage case law and examine the implications of the FirstPort v Settlers Court RTM decision.

Meanwhile, Katherine Simpson, solicitor at Edwin Coe, will explore the risks of ‘holding over’ at the end of the lease term. She will also discuss the legal basis for the service of the relevant notices and the practical impact of holding over from a valuation point of view. 

Additionally, Tom Jefferies of Landmark Chambers will talk about how to value a tenants’ improvements to the property over the lifetime of the lease, as well as explaining the latest developments in the case of Cadogan Holdings Limited v Fleur Marie Alberti. Lastly, Ellodie Gibbons of Tanfield Chambers will offer delegates an update on recent case law. 

“Leasehold issues have remained firmly in the spotlight over the past 12 months, and the government has recently introduced the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act and, though timings are still not clear, has also committed to further reform to the valuation system over the course of this Parliament. It is therefore more important than ever that professionals in this sector are fully aware of issues that impact practice,” Marc Chick, director of ALEP, said.  

“We are delighted to be able to welcome members to this year’s Conference in-person and we are pleased to offer a line-up of impressive speakers who will deliver thought-provoking presentations designed to encourage delegates to debate and share their wide-ranging views. We hope these topics will prove particularly useful as we head out of the pandemic and into a potentially challenging economic climate.”
