Plots on a portal are being sold to agents in a bid to raise as much money as possible for charity by the end of this year.
The website, Propertypixel, has been launched by Zoopla in aid of the Prince’s Trust, which is running a Million Makers competition.
Zoopla, which had to secure £1,500 seed funding from the Prince’s Trust panel of “dragons”, has the site up and running with some early takers of plots, which cost £50 each.
The website offers offers the chance for agents to increase their own brand exposure with each plot linking back to their own website.
The site will remain live for a minimum of three years, and if successful in selling all 2,500 available plots Zoopla will take out a national newspaper advert to thank all its supporters.
So far just 130 plots have been sold to 17 companies with an average spend of £394, equating to eight plots per company.
Early supporters include Hunters, Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, Field & Sons, and LSL, with many more expected to follow.
The Zoopla team is backed by Alex Tew, a student who created The Million Dollar Home Page back in 2005, where he sold a million pixels for $1m dollars to help fund his academic studies.
Alex is now supporting the team in the promotion of the Property Pixel site and said: “It’s great to see my original idea being used for charitable purposes. Hopefully all the plots will be sold and generate loads of cash for the Prince’s Trust.”
Kevin Hollinrake, of Hunters Estate Agents, was the first to take space on the site.
He said: “It’s typical Zoopla behavior to not settle for baking cakes or raffles to raise funds for charity. They have taken an innovative idea and added a charitable twist to it. When they approached me it sounded like a good idea and we were more than happy to get involved.”
Anna White, marketing manager at Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, said: “It’s a great idea and one that is very easy for the whole industry to get behind. We’re delighted to be involved and we wish the Zoopla team every success in raising what could be a significant amount for charity.”
Lawrence Hall, of Zoopla, said: “I would like to thank all those who have supported our charity site so far and really do hope we can sell all 2,500 by December 31, and raise significant funds for the Prince’s Trust and help change young lives.”
Zoopla is a patron of the Prince’s Trust and this year alone has raised £25,000 for it.
