One of the industry’s leading compliance experts is to lead a roundtable discussion in May on the anti-money laundering issue - and agents have been invited to the event free of charge.
The event is organised by Thirdfort - a company involved in sourcing funds and compliance checks, and backed by Zoopla founder Alex Chesterman, legal firm Mishcon de Reya, HM Land Registry and data company Experian.
It will be chaired by high profile industry compliance expert Michael Day of Integra Property Services.
The debate will centre on how estate agents can keep up with frequently-changing legislation and regulations - the 5th Money Laundering Directive will be introduced by the end of 2019 - as well as discussing technology’s role in streamlining the administration of ID and other checks.
There will also be analysis of AML for companies and trusts and ways in which AML could be handled just once in a property transaction instead of on separate occasions by different professions involved in the chain.
The issue has shot back to prominence in recent weeks because of an increased focus on the agency industry’s compliance issues: the government’s Flag It Up campaign has suggested too few Suspicious Activity Reports have been lodged by issues and HMRC has recently taken heavily publicised action against some agents - notably Countrywide - over alleged failures to comply with AML legislation.
