Dumb Perignon! Daily Mail mocks champagne-quaffing housing minister

The Daily Mail has mocked housing minister Chris Pincher for advising people to going £174-a-bottle champagne while awaiting the rollout of the Covid vaccine.

Pincher - nominally responsible for the regulation of the housing market and handling the controversial Grenfell Tower cladding controversy - has been writing of his love of champagne in The Critic magazine.

Pincher writes: "If you have the chance, or the wherewithal to buy a bottle, these bubbles will brighten your family bubble and provide an alternative vaccine until the real thing provides more permanent inoculation against the memory of last year.”

The bottle in question is the 166th edition of the Grand Cru Cuvée – a champagne blended annually using more than 120 wines from 10 different vintages.

The Daily Mail says Pincher has stated in the House of Commons register of interests that he earned £1,200 for writing six wine reviews for the Critic magazine in the past year.

He donated only £400 of this to charity.

The Mail headline and strap line is: “Dumb Perignon! Housing minister who should be sorting out the cladding scandal is too busy reviewing champagne.”

Pincher declined to comment to the Mail: Estate Agent Today has asked the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government if it will comment.

Here is the Mail story.
