An announcement from Propertymark this afternoon says:
The Board of Propertymark has accepted the resignation of its CEO, Tim Balcon. Following four months in the role Tim has decided, and mutually agreed with the Board, that he will stand down as CEO of Propertymark today.
This follows a short period of handover to Interim Executive Chair, Nicky Heathcote.
Nicky Heathcote, Interim Executive Chair of the Propertymark Board said: “We thank Tim for his time at Propertymark and wish him well for the future. The Board look forward to driving the strategy forward and shall continue to provide the highest level of support and guidance to our members.”
Tim Balcon said: “I have no doubt Propertymark has a very bright future ahead of it. Sadly, I believe it is in the best interest of Propertymark and myself for me to step down at this point in its development. I wish to convey to all Propertymark members my gratitude and respect for the way in which they have embraced my leadership. Equally I wish the Board and in particular the exceptional staff at Propertymark my best wishes for the future.”
Balcon had previously led a number of professional bodies, most recently the IEMA - the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment - at which he claimed to have improved its year-on-year membership growth. He spoke with Angels Media chief executive just a few weeks ago about what he planned for Propertymark - you can see that interview here.
His is the latest resignation to rock the association in recent years.
Just on Saturday it was announced that NAEA President Kirsty Finney had resigned after only six of her 12 months term of office - no explanation was given by Propertymark for her departure, and Balcon refused to comment or extend any thanks for her service.
Former NAEA chief executive Mark Hayward was scheduled to leave but then returned with a new title of Propertymark Chief Policy Advisor; his former ARLA chief executive counterpart David Cox left unexpectedly last year and now works at Rightmove; former NAEA chairman Christopher Hamer left last year, again at what appeared short notice.

Seriously- what is going on?! Propertymark need to be open about what's happening as recent events raise some very serious questions that members need answering urgently.
NEWS FLASH - who cares.
Sounds like Propertymark is imploding
Kristjan is right. Our membership organisation is in crisis and the members are entitled to know what is going on. Straightforward honest answers need to be given ASAP.
Too many rotten apples and skeletons in cupboards.
Perhaps Tim found out more than he was meant to and didn't want to tarnish his reputation.
The board need to make a clear statement ASAP - a problem of an organisaton supposedly led and governed by the volunteer board but, in reality , largely run by the paid executive.
The PR handling of all of these situations has been appalling - probably trying to protect people but consequently creating more speculation and conjecture.
Sadly, the organisation started losing its influence and credibility a long time ago before when being a licenced ARLA or NAEA agent really meant something to us agents and to some landlords especially, say 10ish years ago. Communication/PR seems to have been its Achilles heel since, with its membership, who are incidentally paying over 50% more than they were then, with the public and its failed rebrand in 2017, with its lobbying of government, and now it seems internally as well.
More importantly perhaps is that these golden kiss offs due to poor management and or poor judgement at interview stage or just plain old incompetence are draining the bank balance so expect a rise in membership fees soon.
What on earth is going on?!
It’s been creaking for a while now and appears to be heading in entirely the wrong direction
Can see lots of agents jumping ship on the back of this quite understandably, zero benefits of being a member
Sorry to hear of Tim Balcon’s departure.
I recently spoke to him whilst at Propertymark regarding the ROPA recommendations and my worry of having to study and sit exams to carry on being an agent which I have been since 1978.
He was a thoroughly decent man, listened and allayed my concerns.
Tim Balcon gave me the impression that he was full of fresh and good ideas regarding the future of Propertymark despite not having a property industry background.
Now he has gone before he even started.
I told him that I felt Propertymark was no longer at the forefront of representing agents big or small, they seem not to be tackling the increased burden of too much regulation which is drowning the industry.
I always felt that being a Member of Propertymark had credence and now with the lack transparency & leadership of the organisation and the exorbitant cost, this will make me less likely to renew my membership.
