The Crown Prosecution Service has joined in the criticism of unemployed estate agent Lewis Hughes, who last week admitted a count of assault by beating in the case concerning the government’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty.
Hughes was sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to pay £100 in compensation after admitting the assult.
Hughes forcibly placed his arm around Whitty and putting him into a headlock as he tried to make his way through St James’s Park in Westminster at around 7.20pm on June 27 this year.
Whitty - who was on his way to a meeting with the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson - did not receive any injuries.
Now a statement from Kalsoom Shah, from the Crown Prosecution Service, says: “This was a completely unacceptable act of targeting and assaulting Professor Chris Whitty.
“Lewis Hughes showed little regard for him or relevant social distancing rules when he accosted the government’s Chief Medical Officer in the street. His behaviour was both shocking and disgraceful.
“Like everyone else, public figures should be free to go about their day to day work without fear of being targeted and assaulted. The CPS will always work with the police to bring to justice those who break the law in this way.”
A second defendant - Jonathan Chew, 24, of no fixed address - is due to face trial in November in relation to the same incident.
He is charged with one count of assault by beating and one count of obstructing police.

I know all those who work at the NHS are treated like God and this is no exception. It's a £100 fine and all way OTT. Now that will get you all going ha ha.
I hope your daughter or wife is assaulted and the assailant just gets £100 fine
I guess you would laugh at that.
Ha ha Ha
Why are you highlighting it potentially happening to a female member of James' family?
It was a playful get together all blown out of proportion. But the media loves it and the public fall for this.
Yawn
So again if someone did that to your daughter or wife that would be fine then. Nice
"Why are you highlighting it potentially happening to a female member of James' family?"
Because he thinks it is a laughing matter of it happens to a member of some else's family.
No, you explicitly referred to wife or daughter, do sons, brothers, nephews not count in your world?
There we no guns, no knives, no punching. Sounds like a typical night out on a Friday night. I think ex wife, daughter and son would be pleased of the attention to have a selfie with a couple of fun guys. All OTT.
