Royal Mail chief becomes new chairman of Countrywide

Countrywide has announced to the Stock Exchange this morning that Peter Long will take over from Grenville Turner as chairman at the end of April.

Long is currently chairman of Royal Mail plc, and has held a variety of senior roles in the travel and leisure sector.

He was formerly senior independent non-executive Director of RAC plc from 2001 to 2005 and Rentokil Initial plc from 2005 to 2014. He was also a non-executive director of Debenhams plc between 2006 and 2009.

"Peter brings a strong customer focus and a wealth of plc board experience" says a Countrywide statement this morning.

In a statement to the City, Countrywide's chief executive Alison Platt says: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Grenville for his dedication and significant commitment to the development of Countrywide during his tenure. As Chairman and previously as CEO, Grenville has been unwavering in his stewardship of Countrywide. Personally, he has been unstinting in his support and guidance for me and his counsel has been invaluable.

“I am pleased that Peter has accepted the role of Chairman and would like to welcome him to Countrywide. I and the entire Board look forward to working with him as Countrywide pursue its strategic objectives."

Long himself says this morning: “I am delighted to be joining the Countrywide plc board as Chairman and am looking forward to working with Alison and her team. The group has a clear focus on its customers as it executes its strategy and generates long-term sustainable shareholder value.”

You are better off away from it all Grenville. I wonder when CW will take up a franchise in Debenhams.

Interesting move from Long and a pretty high-profile appointment from Countrywide. A statement of intent, perhaps?

He's certainly going to have some challenges ahead of him. Countrywide seem to be biting off more than they can chew in recent weeks and months, so maybe a steadying influence will help them. They seem to be scoring PR own goals all too frequently of late.

But where are the estate agents? I realise that the CEO is trying to create a bold new retail company, but she still needs experts in property & financial services to advise her. If I was a big shareholder I would be concerned.
