Estate agency issues statement over racist football tweet

High end agency Savills is conducting “a full investigation” into a racist tweet posted overnight.

A Savills statement posted on Twitter this morning at around 0820 said: “Savills is committed to eliminating discrimination and encouraging diversity amongst our workforce. A full investigation will be carried out in regards to this unacceptable incident.”

A separate statement issued to Estate Agent Today at around 0900 said: "Savills abhors and has zero tolerance to any form of racism and racial discrimination and is appalled by the racist comments in these tweets. Savills is immediately investigating and will take appropriate action."

The Savills statements do not name any specific event but are thought to relate to an employee who apparently posted a racist tweet overnight via his personal Twitter account, after England’s defeat in the Euros 2020 final.

The tweet - screenshot and widely circulated on social media this morning - has now been deleted by the employee, who has also deleted his entire personal Twitter account.

However, thousands of subsequent tweets from shocked members of the public have recirculated the offending statements and have demanded to know Savills' response.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister has this morning tweeted: “This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.”

And the FA says: "We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.

"We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real life consequences. Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse."

Having seen screenshots of the since deleted offending tweet, I'd be utterly amazed if the employee in question keeps their job. Totally disgusting, moronic and depressingly predictable.

Following the Chris Whitty incident, it's not been a good few days for those in the property industry.

  • James C

What a complete moron. Put the persons' name on Social Media and let them deal with the consequences.

After watching the expected outcome of three very highly paid footballers fail at 12 yards, i can imagine after a few drinks, some will vent their frustration on social media. Of course it is not acceptable.

    icon

Yes that’s when their true colours come out their innermost thoughts. Drink is not an excuse. Anyone who uses degrading racial language to vent should never be allowed to work in this profession. “Expected outcome”? Everyone had high hopes for these players, this is immense pressure. You try scoring a goal stepping up to the mark at 19years old after being dragged off the pitch by the scruff off your neck. If that had been the other way round it would have been a red card. If they’d won the racists wouldn’t even acknowledge their work.

    icon

He was fouled - big deal
It was not a red card it was a booking all day long
After Chellini got the red card he had nothing to deal with from our vaunted players who barley had a kick after the goal.

What a shame you weren't available to play James. Or perhaps a few of your employees could do better?

    Rollo Miles

have you seen the tweet in question !!!! Total racism NO JUSTIFICATION.

    Rollo Miles

Drink is no excuse for racism

What is wrong with these idiots, sitting cowering in their "protected" anonymity, I'm so proud of every one of the players

    Guy Hodge FNAEA

Er...Pot / Kettle "Agent s" - Have you read some of the obnoxious comments on this site by people who use protected anonymity?

    Guy Hodge FNAEA

Mind you - I agree that we should be proud of the players! :)

  • icon

What an idiot. No excuse. He will be unemployable for a long long time

    icon

After the Whitty incident, what worries me is that a lot of agents don't seem to understand that people wanting to view property need to be able to do so in safety. And there are comments in this thread that show exactly this negligent attitude. If Savills can't hire people who are beyond the knuckle-dragging band, that is a dire picture of this industry. I wonder if many agents understand just how disliked they are by the very people that they pretend to "serve".

We are trusted to enter the public’s homes. What “investigation” is needed.if he was one of mine it would be a pre work meeting and an instant dismissal.

Social media is equally as negative as it is positive and is quite broken. Maybe we should re classify it as “anti social media”.

Lets hope that it does not take another 55 years to get to an important football final!!

    Rollo Miles

Let’s hope it does not take 55 years to stamp out racist

I watched the ending of the game last night and I said to my family we know what is going to happen now.
Predictably it has. I am not in the industry but I use your services as a commercial customer and I am a Black woman

I said the same to myself last night at the end of the penalty shoot out

its sad that such a beautiful game is always ruined by such supporters.

I feel ashamed that it has come to this Paulette

  • icon

The 3 VERY HIGHLY PAID players missed scoring at 12 yards. When they play for England it is expected that they score. It took 55 years from the last tournament in 1966 to get to this stage a final. Emotions are running high. Many supporters expected a better result and were bitterly disappointed. Criticism of a missed penalty has to be expected.

criticism is one thing........ Racism is however totally another!

If adults cant accept disappointment (so its been 55 years, so what!) then it says a lot about certain sections of our society and their own personal inadequacies and issues (they need to grow up!)..

    icon

    Disingenuous.

    Rollo Miles

I think you need to stop trying to justify racism

    icon

This was not criticism it was disgusting racist comments

  • Vilesh Rew

James Gibbs, you might just want to wind that in a bit, sir.
Bravery - stepping up to take a penalty with the expectations of 65 million people on your shoulders (no matter how much you get paid)
Cowardice - firing racist comments at young men who did more to contribute to the country's football team than you ever could (no matter how disappointed you feel)

  • Daniel Hamilton-Charlton

There have been some asinine comments made and dressing a comment up to appear ok but with a deep undertone of disrespect is so wrong Mr Gibbs. I couldn't care how much they are paid, it is of no consequence what so ever. The fact that our goalie saved two who is half the size of their man mountain, it was expected that saves were more than possible. Shots had to be made that would be out of reach and mistakes can happen under such immense pressure. These men are at the top of their game and should be celebrated as our countries footballing future. They will bring glory in the years to come that will be enjoyed by millions.
Any form of negativity is most unwelcome.

  • icon

    It is of every consequence
They may be the nest we have but they hardly had a touch and Could not keep the ball after we scored.
You say that other peoples opinions are unwelcome - sorry but other are entitled to an opinion - you do not have the right to tell other what they are allowed to say or not say.
As for pressure - it is not pressure - pressure and stress if what some of my family had to do is WW2 flying planes and being on destroyers.
Kicking a ball about is nothing - it is a game - no one died - it is not a big deal.
In the pub I was in within a few minutes of the end people were laughing and joking and had got over it
No excuse for such nonsense aimed at the players on social media of course

    Daniel Hamilton-Charlton

OK. Don't misquote me, thanks. "You say that other peoples opinions are unwelcome" No I didn't. I said no such thing. Read it again if necessary.
Thanks again Jan. My comments are my opinion and, in your own words, you cannot prevent me from having one.
In your own words, I quote "you do not have the right to tell other what they are allowed to say or not say." and again, I have said no such thing.
So you don't believe that these lads, who were carrying the hopes and dreams of the country on their shoulders, had any stress or pressure to manage.....Ok then.

    icon

to Jan Byers : my assorted family and antecedents spent many years fighting in various conflicts and I have no doubt they would be perplexed that you drag their good names and their memories into some ludicrous carping because a young lad (just like years of other lads) didn't manage a Penalty. My father, a Destroyer captain on the North Atlantic run, Pedestal, Malta etc etc said to me "it is interesting that when someone is blasted to pieces in front of you, that you notice human blood is the same colour wherever you are from". What is really sad is that Britain has become an aggressive, violent, DRUNKEN country filled with feral people who use any excuse to cause violent trouble.

  • Rollo Miles

I think we are all totally appalled by some of the racists comments which have been directed towards great players who represented us all on the world stage . Shame on anyone who tries to justify these vile tweets. As for James Gibbs remarks above , have you seen the tweet in question !!!! Total racism NO JUSTIFICATION.

  • icon

Rollo Miles. I do not tweet and have not seen the tweet and racist tweets are totally unacceptable. But we must be able to give comment on poor play without being called racists!!!!

    Vilesh Rew

Haha, back pedalling faster that Pritti Patel there, mate. This Savill's guy did not "comment on poor play". You should read the content before commenting. All you've done on here is make yourself look very foolish.
