Former BBC Director General Greg Dyke has been revealed as the man behind a £35m project to developer a historic part of Devon’s waterfront - and he has selected the agency to spearhead sales.
The project involves the restoration and redevelopment of Fort Bovisand, built in the mid-1800s to defend Plymouth Sound. Used most recently as a commercial dive training centre, it is now on Historic England’s ‘at risk’ register.
This project aims to restore the fort, improve sea defences, reinstate the harbour, and create more than 80 new homes and apartments with sea views. The first phase of properties consisting of six, high-end cottages will be finished and ready to move into by summer 2022.
The agencies behind the sale are Webbers Fine & Country and Maitlands.
Malcolm Prescott, managing director of Webbers Fine & Country, says: “This project will firstly restore an historic building and bring it back to life, while creating amazing homes within a unique, beautiful and rugged surrounding.
“Three of the fort’s casemates will provide space for a Visitors’ Centre and Events Space, a bistro café with rooftop terrace offering stunning views across Plymouth Sound, and a collaborative working space, which will allow people to make the most of the current remote working trend.”
Dyke himself, who is now chairman of Fort Bovisand Developments Ltd, says: “We acquired the site several years ago and as soon as I saw it and understood its history, I was determined it should be saved … The exciting regeneration plans will bring new life to the site, protecting a significant historic building and bringing it back to sustainable and meaningful use, while introducing new contemporary aspects and homes to the site.”

Beautiful spot. Over the years, I have spent many weeks nearby in a chalet at Bovisand. Might start saving my pennies.
So what
It sounds a great project. Well done Webbers and Maitlands. Save one for me :)
