Hundreds turn up to exhibition of online agents (or not)

An incredible 900 potential clients turned up to an online estate agents’ two-day event in a midlands hotel.

Hard to believe?

You are right to be sceptical.

But a press release is doing the rounds and appears, to journalists, to be the real thing as it seems to come via a site called PR Web which is regularly used by the media.

It goes on to say that the event was such a huge success that it is likely to be replicated in further events, with the next one planned for January.

However, there are some curiosities in the release: random capital letters, internet links that seem bizarre, and some odd inconsistencies as to whether “Online Estate Agents” are actually one of the UK’s biggest estate agents or, as the title would suggest, an exciting new trade body.

We were somewhat stumped, so EAT sought the help of the two online agents this community knows best. Were they invited to this exhibition? No – and almost certainly because it never took place.

Russell Quirk of eMoov quickly pointed out that this was an article to build search engine optimisation (SEO).

Adam Day, of Hatched, agreed. And both agree that articles written purely for SEO purposes are rubbish.

But, if that is the case, who would have placed the article and why?

Our consultants think it may have been the hotel. We’re not so sure. Why would a hotel promote something that had never taken place?
